The pumpkin spice bars have arrived! There are many ways to celebrate as we get closer to fall, although the best way has to be snacking on some all natural B² Bars!
Pumpkin spice is made with cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and nutmeg; there are a few very desirable properties in these ingredients.
Cinnamon in particular has many health benefits that people have known about for centuries. The dried bark from the formally known Cinnamomum tree is loaded with antioxidants. In a widely cited study from the University of Hong Kong, Cinnamon is by far the most highly concentrated source of antioxidants of any common spice. It is so high in antioxidants that it is sometimes used as a natural food preservative in some places. It also has shown to lower blood sugar levels, aid in fighting infections, and is suspected to do much more, however further research is required.
Ginger also has a long history of being used for medicinal properties. It contains phenolic compounds (acids) that have shown to help with digestion, although the amount in a single B² Bar is not enough to have much of an effect. For the same reason, it has shown to reduce nausea and even give relief to cold and flu symptoms. However, one of its flagship benefits is the anti-inflammatory properties that are especially potent.
Cloves and nutmeg also have health benefits however they are used in such small quantity here that they are most accurately described as being used for flavor.
